Mungbean is the major Kharif pulse crop of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with major areas lying in districts of Karak, Lakki Marwat, Tank and D.I.Khan. Kurram is another major area mungbean particularly black-seeded mungbean. It is the only type being grown in Kurram since unknown times. Common bean is another very important food legume crop being grown as intercrop in maize in isolated pockets of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Kurram is the only area where it is grown as sole crop throughout the valley. Local land races of both the crops being grown in Kurram since long have low yield potential due to un-known and poor genetic background. The pulses group of NIFA is continuously striving for developing/evolving high-yielding and environment-smart varieties of these crops. As a result of concerted efforts, the group developed/evolved 02 first-ever high yielding black-seeded mungbean varieties ‘NIFA Mung Spinghar-21 and NIFA Mung Sikaram-21’ in the year 2021 and 02 high yielding common bean varieties ‘NIFA Lobia Red-2022 and NIFA Lobia Yellow-2022’ in the year 2022. These varieties are being multiplied in Kurram and other areas of the KP through Agricultural Extension Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. |
