Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has enough potential to produce a variety of vegetables. Okra is one of them cultivated on a reasonable acreage in the province, but it’s per unit yield is very low. In order to enhance per acre yield of okra, concerted efforts are being undertaken at NIFA to breed okra genotypes best suited for cultivation under local growing conditions having preferred traits like short stature, medium sized, green fruits and prolonged fruiting ability through hybridization and induced mutation. The vegetable group has recently initiated R&D on the development of improved okra varieties through the use of implementation of innovative and effective techniques.
