Research Group: Termite Management

Introduction

Termite is a serious pest of agricultural crops as well as buildings in Pakistan and around the globe. Due to cryptic nature of termite, it may attack and damage crops, orchards and buildings without leaving any initial sign and symptom for farmers or house owners. Concealed habitat of termites makes their control very difficult and tricky. Plant Protection Division (PPD) of NIFA is pioneer in Pakistan regarding R&D activities related to termite management in both agricultural and urban setups. Termite management group is engaged in developing cost effective and environment friendly IPM techniques for the control of termites.

Group Composition
  1. Dr. Muhammad Misbah ul Haq, Principal Scientist/Group Leader
  2. Mr. Muhammad Irfan, Senior Scientist
  3. Mr. Midrarullah, Principal Scientific Assistant
Research Objectives
  • Development of eco-friendly technologies for risk-reduced management of crop and building termites.

  • Reduction of indiscriminate use of synthetic pesticide for termite control by developing:

    1. Slow acting toxicant bait.

    2. Organic plant based liquid termiticides.

Salient Achievements

1. NIFA-Termap:

Developed an eco-friendly termite trap named as NIFA-Termap for exhaustive trapping of subterranean termites. The trap is used for detection and collection of large number of termites on periodic basis and helps in weakening of colony and ultimately controlling it on permanent basis.

2. Colony delineation: Devised cheap and easy method for delineation of termite colony though use of biological dyes.
3. Advisory Services: Provided advisory services regarding termite control to different government and private setups, farmers, house owners etc. for timely and eco-friendly management of termites.
